Morganite is a variety of beryl (hardness 7 ½ to 8 on the Mohs scale), as are emerald and aquamarine. Its pale pink color, in pastel shades, is due to the presence of small amounts of manganese in its crystal structure. Morganite is sometimes heated, as this treatment intensifies its color.
This often very pure and inclusion-free stone takes its name from the great American financier J. P. Morgan, who also owned the Titanic. The largest deposits of morganite are found in Brazil, Madagascar, the United States and Pakistan.
