Ruby is one of the four gemstones along with diamond, emerald and sapphire and belongs to the corundum family. In jewelry, two varieties are used: the red ruby and the sapphire, which can have multiple colors. The name "corundum" is of Indian origin and refers to the great hardness of this gem, one of the hardest stones after diamond (9 on the Mohs scale). The ruby owes its name to its red color (from the Latin rubeus, "reddish"). The most sought-after color is called "pigeon's blood", a deep red with a hint of blue. Inclusions are very common but do not determine the quality of the gem; they guarantee its authenticity compared to synthetic rubies.

From a practical point of view, rubies are easy to care for as they are very resistant to shock, acids and heat. Simply wash with water and dishwashing liquid and rinse with alcohol.
